Location
Located near the banks of Mondego river, Coimbra is known worldwide
for its 700-year-old University, which was founded by King Dinis,
and definitively transferred to Coimbra in 1537.
Coimbra is located between Lisbon and Porto, right in the heart
of Beira Litoral (one of Portugal's provinces). Its population is
about 140 000. It is a crossing point between north and south and
sits on a hill. Coimbra was a city during the Roman occupation,
when it was known as Aeminium. Coimbra is home to a fascinating
historical heritage, and there are several important archaeological
sites within a short distance of the city, which are well worth
visiting.
